We thought we’d go the whole hog, drove through Austria, Italy and France, no motorways, just small stuff. Intense? Oh, yes. But everyone was more than up for it.france1

Rehydration is always important…

And then came the French Alps with their dizzying heights.

france3

You can tell by our faces. Not only dizzying but dazzling fun as well.

The craziest thing of all was that we were sort of following the Tour de France which meant that unfortunately one or two passes were closed. We also found that the French are absolutely mad cycling up these monsters in their droves ๐Ÿ˜†

france5This one was just north of our base in Bourg Saint Maurice, where we knew a great camp site. As everyone was keen on tents we brought ours as well. Not so high but some lovely stretches of tarmac. The Cormet de Roselend with its less than 2000m quickly became a favourite of mine.

Don’t think I’ve been higher with a bike than Col d’Iseran. Here is a photo (naturally without bikes) to prove it.

france8As we tour the Italian and Austrian Alps at least 8 or 9 times a year this was something special for us and we would gladly return to this beautiful part of the world.
